Leather bag care: keep your favourite looking good for years

Our leather bags and backpacks are handmade companions that see you through the ups and downs of everyday life. To make sure they do so for many years, we use authentic, durable materials and careful craftsmanship. With the right care, you can play your part. We use different types of leather depending on the series, and each has its own needs. Here you'll find the right tips for yours.

Caring for waxed semi-aniline leather

Open-pored leather has a natural, untreated surface that shows off its unique grain particularly well. Used occasionally, a lotion for open-pored genuine leather nourishes it and protects it from moisture and dirt.

How to do it

  1. Test on a hidden area first.
  2. Put a small amount of lotion on a soft cotton cloth and work it into the cloth before applying it to the bag. Never put it directly on the leather, and always use it sparingly.
  3. Carefully work it in from seam to seam.

Good to know: care products make the leather slightly darker. This usually evens out after a short period of use.

Caring for Hunter leather

Hunter leather develops a patina with use. To let it evolve, we recommend avoiding care products at first. A wax-based water-repellent spray protects against heavy rain and dirt. If the leather becomes lighter and brittle over time, it is lacking nutrients, and leather grease will help. Both products should be suitable for open-pored genuine leather.

Applying leather grease

  1. Test on a hidden area first.
  2. Work the grease into a soft cloth, then apply it sparingly to the bag.There's no need to polish, so the surface stays matt.
  3. Leave the bag at room temperature overnight until the grease has been fully absorbed. Only then use it again.

Caring for sanded leather

The leather in these series has a finely sanded surface, which gives it a velvety feel. High-quality waxes allow an individual patina to develop over time. If you'd rather preserve the original look for longer, use a soft leather brush every now and then. Brushing also keeps the material supple and flexible.

  • Brush regularly with a soft leather brush.
  • Use a water-repellent spray with UV protection to guard against wet weather and sunlight.

Frequently asked questions about leather care

Should I treat my leather bag with a water-repellent spray?

Leather is a natural material with a look all of its own. High-quality oils and waxes protect our leathers from day one. A water-repellent spray with UV protection also guards it against wet weather and sunlight. It helps against light soiling too, as dirt can't penetrate the deeper layers. With Hunter leather, it's best to avoid care products at first so the patina can develop.

How to do it:

  1. Spray outdoors if possible, or in a well-ventilated room.
  2. Apply thinly and evenly from a distance of about 30 cm.
  3. Leave to dry at room temperature for at least 20 minutes.
  4. Reapply from time to time to maintain the effect.

How often should I clean and care for my leather bag?

That depends on how often you use it. Light-coloured bags and bags that see a lot of use in winter need a little more attention.

What should I do if my leather bag gets wet?

Please let your bag dry completely in the open air before using it again. Don't leave it in the sun, put it on a radiator or use a hairdryer: UV light fades leather, while heating and hot air dry it out. Then reapply the water-repellent spray.

How do I remove stains from my leather bag?

There's no one-size-fits-all solution for stains. These two home remedies have proven effective:

  • Denim dye transfer on light-coloured bags: mix 25% vinegar essence with water in a 1:1 ratio, dampen a soft cotton cloth with it and gently wipe the leather.
  • Fresh discolouration: treat with sensitive baby wipes.

What can I do about scratches or scuffs?

Please don't try to touch them up yourself, as colour creams and similar products can easily do more harm than good. Our Bag Doctor will be happy to take a look at your bag and find the right solution.

How do I clean the lining of my leather bag?

The lining is usually very easy to clean. As it is generally not stitched to the base of the bag, you can pull it out for cleaning. Light soiling can be removed with soap and a damp cotton cloth. Upholstery cleaner helps with heavy soiling. Please make sure the cleaning product does not come into contact with the leather and that the lining is completely dry before you tuck it back into the bag!

Why does my leather look darker after care?

Slight darkening from care products can't be avoided. It usually fades after a short period of use. It's best to use colourless care products, as coloured ones can rub off onto clothing or furniture.

Can I have my bag repaired?

Our repair service fixes the vast majority of defects quickly and easily.

Upcycling tip: cut up an old cotton T-shirt and use it as a cloth for care and cleaning.
